7 Youre Always On - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Branding 24/7 Youre Always On - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As the number of users exponentially grows on social networks, the demand for every single person to have their own air time increases. We will constantly have to work harder to become known and remembered now and in the future. If I dont see your face online every day, then I forget about you when Im looking to hire. Facebook is about to approach 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million, LinkedIn has over 70 million, and there are approximately 150 million blogs. If you add the amount of blog posts published per day, plus the amount of traditional news articles published, and then add social updates, your brain will start hurting. There is so much noise right now, so the competition for attention is becoming very challenging for most people. We are always on and have to always be out there promoting our brands. The demise of one-off promotional campaigns If a celebrity appears on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, they are there to promote their movie, their latest CD or even a book they just got published. No celebrity goes on that show without having something to sell. When it comes to your career, you cant afford to have these one-off promotional campaigns like celebrities do. You have to constantly be out there talking to people, showing your name and face, and adding some type of value to serve your audience. You simply cant afford to be forgotten, especially in a world of endless choices. What this means to you is that you have to consistently publish content through all of your distribution systems. That way, people will notice you, remember you, and when they have a business problem or an open position, you will be the top-of-mind brand. Face time 2.0 In the workplace, face time means that your management sees your actual face in the office on a reoccurring basis. To management, this means that your not only present at work, but youre being social at work, which is a skill that is praised in most political workplaces. Face time is quickly transitioning to the online medium, especially with the rise of remote workforces. The only difference is that the online world is public, so you can actually send the wrong message to management, without even thinking about it. If they see that youre on Facebook for ten hours a day, you arent as social media specialist, then it looks bad. The new Apple iPhone has the ability to do video conferencing between iPhone 4s. Aside from Skype, UStream, and other available technologies, the new iPhone has broken geographic boundaries. Of course, if youre physically in your managers presence, that will count more than seeing them through your phone. What these technologies do is to bring you closer to the people that control the fate of your career. By doing this, you have more career opportunities because your management will have a stronger connection to you. Reputation management and privacy I think Mark Zuckerberg may be right with his end of privacy announcement a while ago. To prove his hypothesis, a new research study just came out that says that 77% of Americans arent concerned about privacy. Also, very few people disabled their Facebook pages when they changed users settings without consent. Do we really care about privacy? Will we have a choice weather to care about it or not? We need to be on 24/7 and our social stream has to be seen by our network. This does mean that you should be professional with every message you publish though. A lot of careless people have already been fired because of their online presence. Remember that if people dont have access to your streams, they have access to other peoples streams, which means you suffer a competitive disadvantage. Your turn How much face time are you getting? What are your concerns will being out there 24/7?

Help Writing a Government Resume
Help Writing a Government ResumeThere are a number of ways in which you can go about getting help writing a government resume. The first thing you need to do is to write a short story, a series of lines on how you will be differentiating yourself from the competition. Here are a few ideas for starting a story.'I am excited about joining the next company I hear about.' 'I am very well-trained in the management program at my company.' 'I would like to use my business and management skills in order to make more money.' The 8 Most Damaging Ways People Let Themselves Down Every Day - Kathy Caprino
The 8 Most Damaging Ways People Let Themselves Down Every Day Part of Kathy Caprinos series Braving Up To Build Your Best Life As I enter my second decade of helping people build happier lives and livelihoods, I continually see that our professional successes and failures, and our crushed hopes, have everything to do with what we believe about ourselves internally, and how weâve come to operate in the world and navigate through our challenges. People tend to see outer circumstances beyond their control as the culprit for their dissatisfaction and disappointment in life and work, thwarting them at every turn. But in reality, itâs our inner experience that drives our outer one. My research has shown that when people are not sufficiently clear (about who they are and what they are capable of), or confident and courageous enough, they fail at achieving their dreams and goals, and let themselves down on a daily basis. Below are the eight most damaging ways people fail themselves every day: You donât speak up for yourself. The vast majority of people who are deeply dissatisfied with their lives, work and relationships suffer from one core challenge: an inability to speak up authoritatively and clearly for what they want and what they deserve. In my work with adult children of narcissists, for instance, whatâs emerged is a powerful trend around their not being able to make sense of or evaluate rationally what they want, or take a bold stand on it. But this challenge isnât reserved only for those whoâve experienced narcissism growing up; itâs also apparent in thousands of women and men around the world who feel guilty or selfish (or unworthy) if they think about pursuing what they want most deeply. Tip: Commit today to having the one most important conversation in your life that is begging to be had, that will pave the way for asking for what you want and deserve, and getting it. You donât take the time to understand what youâre feeling or what you want. Life is grueling for many today, with zero time to unplug, relax, and be quiet and calm within ourselves. Weâre running, chasing, and striving, without giving ourselves the chance to just be. Sadly, when we stop being alone and quiet with ourselves, when weâve neglected building a relationship with the most important person in our life (ourselves), and when we donât take the essential time to shut out all the chatter, noise and competition of todayâs hyper-connected world, we lose our ability to hear the stirrings of our soul, and the our deepest longings for our lives. Tip: Every day, without fail, take just five minutes to sit with yourself without distraction or disturbance, and breathe deeply. Watch and listen to what emerges for you. You donât let go of the relationships that hurt you. I remember when I was in my late 20âs, it began to occur to me that I had a few âfriendshipsâ that werenât friendly at all, but were very hurtful. My âfriendsâ were cruel, biting, grasping and selfish, and Iâd had enough. I remember committing to doing the tough work of âpurgingâ from my life people who just couldnât give, or be kind or loving. It was tough, and sad, but I did it, and it was a life-changer. I then started to be more careful who I let into my inner circle and trusted. So many of the people I work with are engaged in relationships that are demeaning, devaluing, abusive or unhealthy. Why do we enter into these relationships? Most often itâs because we hook into them unconsciously because donât feel we deserve beautiful love and support. Many have never had it as children, so they donât know what love, care, and compassion truly looks and feels like. Tip: This week, take a good, long look at all your relationships. Are they loving, healthy, happy? Do they serve and support you or are you the one doing all the work in the relationship? Do they help you achieve your highest potential and growth and allow you to have your deepest needs and wants met? If not, do something bold about it. Where you can, purge out of your life those people who chronically hurt and demean you. You donât know how youâre special, important and valuable. The vast majority of people I meet canât answer these pivotal questions: ⢠How are you special? ⢠What important gifts, talents and abilities do you have that you love to use? ⢠What types of outcomes in the world do you love to support? ⢠How do you stand out in the world? ⢠What are your deepest, core values and how are you honoring those in your life and work? ⢠What matters most to you in life, and why is that important? ⢠When youre 90 looking back, what do you want to make sure youve contributed, achieved and created? In our society, weâre not taught to understand ourselves deeply, or even dare to look at how weâre special and valuable. Many are raised to think that exploring these questions means were self-absorbed or narcissistic, but itâs simply not true. Every person on this planet is special, valuable and important. But you canât leverage your unique value and gifts if youâre not even aware of them. Tip: Answer the questions above as honestly as possible (take my free Career Path Self-Assessment to gain more awareness of who you really are and what makes your talents special and important in the world). Then brave up to leverage your skills and talents that you love to use, to make a difference in the world. If you canât answer these questions, get help from people who love, respect and value you, to help you see how youâre special and unique. You donât believe you deserve a happier life or livelihood. People who make a positive difference in the world and experience happiness, gratitude and success in their lives believe they deserve happiness. What we believe will come to be. And those who feel undeserving of joy and success make themselves ârightâ and never achieve it. The experiences we have in our childhoods and families of origin teach us either to feel we are worthy, loved and appreciated, or the opposite. Sadly, many thousands of people were raised to feel unworthy and undeserving. Tip: Think back on the lessons you were taught about yourself by your parents and throughout your childhood. Were you encouraged to see yourself as worthy of love, happiness and success? Were you told you are beautiful, talented, smart, competent, valued, and important? Or were you told you are nothing and wonât amount to anything because you deserve to fail and others have more than you? If those were your messages, itâs time to engage in healing and revising your core beliefs about yourself. Youâve stopped stretching and dreaming. Weâve all read 100 times that stretching outside your comfort zone is critical to your success and happiness. Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, has said âGrowth and comfort do not co-exist.â But how many people are truly stretching in their lives? I see every day people who are stuck doing work they hate, in relationships and endeavors that limit them, but theyâre afraid to stretch beyond these limitations. And theyâve stopped dreaming. They have bought into a million damaging excuses for why they canât have what they want in their lives, and why their most compelling visions are just absurd fantasies. Tip: Start stretching and dreaming again. Do one bold thing this week that will allow you to remember what it feels like to be brave, and do something scary and thrilling. Get used to getting in the cage with your fears and walking toward the unknown. As Ive learned in my own personal life, nothing outside yourself is safe and secure â" itâs in expanding who you are internally, and building your courage to deal with the unknown, that will make your world safer and more secure. You let your anxieties and upsets turn into hate, blame and resentment. Thereâs a great deal of hate in the world today, and according to recent studies, that hate is mounting. Many people turn to hate and blame because they canât manage their own anxieties and fears. They feel vulnerable and deeply afraid, and they find that intolerable. As social researcher Brené Brown has so eloquently said, blame is a way to discharge pain and discomfort. And as international bestselling author, mystic and spiritual leader Lorna Byrne shared in our powerful live webinar recently, Hate poisons us. We hate others when we donât love ourselves enough.â Tip: If you feel wracked with hate, blame and resentment, especially in these anxious times in our country, itâs time to look at your own anxieties and fears, and get help to manage them more effectively. And itâs time to learn to love yourself more deeply. When you do, there is no more room for hate. Youâve forgotten what youâre capable of. Finally, we let ourselves down when we forget what weâre capable of. If youâre stuck in an unfulfilling life or career, youâve lost sight of what youâre truly able to do, create and achieve. There are reasons why we forget, including toxic relationships, bad bosses who tear us down, life lessons that we misread, dashed dreams that bring us to our knees. But when you get back in touch with more hope for the future, and commit yourself to becoming more powerful, life will change. Tip: Find someone who can be a mentor or accountability partner to help you see the future vision of you before itâs hatched.â As Einstein said, âWe canât solve a problem on the level of consciousness that created it.â Shift your consciousness by getting empowering and uplifting help from someone who believes in you and wonât let you take ânoâ for answer about your own life. 5 Things Your Business Website Needs to Shine - When I Grow Up
5 Things Your Business Website Needs to Shine - When I Grow Up After all of the years Iâve spent meticulously clarifying my clientsâ dream businesses, unleashing their shiny mission statements, and carefully curating their first offers, you can trust me when I say I know a good business website when I see one. And guess what? Its not about having the shiniest bells or whistles, and it doesnt have to invoke head-explosions or come after a series of sleepless nights sifting through fonts, colors, and stock photos to make it look professional and work for you. While it is important you take setting up your website seriously â" hey, itâs your business, after all â" it can be done without taking you 5 years and one or two existential crises. (As I once heard someone say, âPut the paint brush down, Picasso.â) In fact, I have a few key bullet points that should smooth out the process for you. Specifically, these are my top 5 things every business website needs to shine online. Anything else beyond what I have listed here is just extra gravy. (And listen, donât shy away from gravy. People love gravy. But gravy is good enough extra gravy is just, well, extra.) If you already have a website, you can give this list a once-over just to make sure thereâs nothing that youâre missing. If youâre just getting started, I recommend tackling your site in this order. It will help you craft an organic flow for your usersâ experience (gag, âtechâ lingo!) and will set you up for success! Here is what your business website needs: A home page: This can also be considered your âlanding pageâ and will be the first thing that opens up when someone clicks on your site. Your navigation bar will be at the top, and just below that you want to tell people right away what your business is and who it is for. At the very bare minimum, this means you need to include your mission statement. This will also act a gatekeeping feature designed to pull the right clients in and keep the wrong ones out. If it takes more than 3 seconds to identify what your business is, your home page isnât doing its job! The second thing you want on your home page is a Call To Action (CTA), and by that, I mean clear direction on what you want your reader to do. Youâll want them to head to your âWork With Youâ or âShopâ pages, for sure there needs to be a CTA for that. Maybe you also want them to read your âAboutâ page, because thats usually the 2nd most popular page on every website! You could potentially add a third thing like reading your killer blog but that should be it. Any more than three CTAs will be overwhelming. As practice and for inspo, click around some of your favorite websites (ahem) and see if you can identify all of the CTAs. Theyâll usually start with a command and show up in the form of a button! ? âClick here to work with me!â âSubscribe for my newsletter!â âSign up for your spot in line!â âAboutâ page: Here, site viewers get to learn about all of the things that make you special and, more importantly, why youâre the right person for the job! As a business coach, I ask the women I work with to include a personal story about what led them to their dream business and why itâs ideal for them now. This gives potential clients a chance to relate to you and get jazzed about the work youâre doing. Also, be sure to include a photo of yourself (even if it isnât professional!) and your full name! This last part should be obvious, but you wouldnât believe how many new entrepreneurs forget! Showing a photo of yourself and including your full name builds trust and shows people thereâs a real person with real power behind your website and work. Be sure to end this page with a CTA, here, too! ( youâll notice a pattern forming, here.) Now that they know all about you, send them to your âWork With Meâ or âShopâ pages. âWork With Meâ and/or âShopâ page: If youâre selling products, this is easy. You simply need to make an image-based catalog of your amazeballs items including their prices and descriptions. Be sure to add a cart feature so people can purchase directly from you. If your biz is service-based, your âWork With Meâ page should take the most time to write! Thatâs because this is where you will pummel your potential clients with your value. I like to use this outline when writing âWork With Meâ pages: First, start with the problem your potential client needs your help solving. You want them to feel like, âYES, sheâs talking about me, and UGH I need someone to help!â Then, paint a picture of how much better your clientsâ situation will be once you solve it for them! ( this is the value! This is the most important part!) Next, get into the process, i.e. how youâre going to make it happen for them and what itâll entail to work with you. I like to include the price on the page, too, so you donât feel like you have to âspringâ it on anyone! Hot tip: donât go too crazy with explaining the logistics. Turns out most clients donât care how you work together, just that theyâll walk away with the results you promise. Before you end, include a small bio about yourself, just in case they didnât make it to your âAboutâ page. Bonus points if it involves a personal story about why this particular offer is personal and exciting for you! It will help your viewer learn about why youâre the perfect woman for the job without having to navigate away from your $ales page! If possible, throw some client testimonials on this page, too peppering them throughout is perfect. Theyâll add more credibility to your work. Extra credit for publishing them with photos and full names! That will resonate even more with your right people. Lastly, include that Call To Action, babe! Sure, you can have a âBuy Nowâ button that leads them right to check out, but Iâm almost exclusively telling my service-based clients to use a short 5-ish question form instead with a headline like âTell me moreâ or âLetâs get started.â Have the prospective client give you their name, email, how they found you, what their biggest challenge is, and when theyâre available to start this work. This will make your first touchpoint so much smoother, and will weed out the tire kickers! *Rule of thumb: The more expensive your offer, the longer this page should be! The more they need to invest, the more information and proof! theyâll need. âContactâ page: A simple contact form is totally fine. At the very least, include a way for your potential clients to email you. If you feel comfortable, this page can also include a phone number, mailing address, or Google Maps location. Your Header/Footer: At the top or bottom of each page, include your social media icons and a way for folks to sign up for your newsletter or opt-in offer. This is where you can also put special deals or discounts! By splattering this info on every page of your website, you make it easy to keep people hooked on you and your businessâ content longer. Bonus: Of course, if youâd like, feel free to include a blog/articles page, too. These are great for anyone who is interested in learning more about you and your âdeal,â plus it will ramp up your Search Engine Optimization (SEO), too. ? Thatâs just a fancy way of saying anyone who is searching for stuff related to what you do will be able to find you easier on Google. Go forth and make some gorgeous websites, business bosses!
